Google has expanded Google Print in Europe,
opening nation-specific book-search portals in France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and
Spain. While Google Print has proved controversial in the U.S., thanks to the two-pronged initiative of GP For
Publishers and GP For Libraries, the European catalogs have all benn acquired in one-to-one negotiations with
publishers. Google is smart to eget the results of this program up and running in as many instances as possible while
lawsuits brew at home. Publisher resistance to
perceived copyright infractions will probably not be eased out of court, but showing the value of the system—and some
popularity if Google can gain consumer traction—will advance the idea among publishers.
